IFSRS, Karamana - Krishi Arivukal XV: "Tree fodders: The feed reserves in IFS".

English

Dairying is the most common allied enterprise in IFS. If cattle feeds from markets are relied on too much, the cost of production escalates and dairying becomes uneconomic. This necessitates generation of green fodder within farms. In addition to different fodder grasses, tree fodders also can be raised in crop fields as they serve as perennial feed sources catering to year round requirement. They have nutritious foliage rich in proteins and minerals, and can be grown as biofences as well. Subabul, Calliandra, Moringa, Sesbania, Mulberry, Glyricidia,Jack, Morinda etc are some common fodder trees suitable for Kerala. Stall wash and bio-gas slurry available in integrated farms can serve as nutrient sources for these trees.
