IFSRS, Karamana - Krishi Arivukal XIV: “Aquaponics : An integral component of IFS”

English

Aquaponics refers to any system that combines aquaculture with hydroponics which function in a symbiotic environment. In normal aquaculture, the excretions of the fish being raised will accumulate in water, increasing toxicity. Here, water from the aquaculture system is fed to the hydroponic system, where the excreta gets broken down by the action of nitrifying bacteria initially to nitrites and subsequently to nitrates which are utilised by the plants as their nutrient source. Later, the purified water gets recirculated back to the aquaculture system.
